Scrabble Champs Head To Ireland
Belfast's Beechlawn House Hotel prepared to welcome Scrabble players for the Northern Ireland Scrabble Championship 2017
This weekend (28th – 29th January 2017) the Beechlawn House Hotel prepared for the onslaught of players ready to participate in the Northern Ireland Scrabble Championship 2017, hosted by All Ireland Scrabble Association and organised by John Cunnigham-Ryan and Stewart Holden.
The tournament ran over the Saturday and Sunday, the format: one open division, 15 rounds. Clocks used with 25 minutes per player per game.
Prizes: Trophies and cash prizes for the top three places plus ratings prizes for others who perform well above their rating. The winner to be awarded the title of Northern Ireland Champion.
MSA’s Ambassador and 2016 World Scrabble Champion, Brett Smitheram, was in attendance and true to form he added another title to his belt.
After the first day Brett was on top form with stats 8 - 0 +926, on the final day Brett finished an impressive 13 – 2 +1113 and took the title Northern Ireland Champion 2017.

Second place was taken by Kevin McMahon follow in third by Philips Owolabi. a huge well done to Nicky Huitson who triumphed in her class, taking wins from a few Scrabble GMs, and finishing in 5th overall. A spectacular event.
