Deck Of The Day #62 - Landfalling In Lille

Hi again! We are still analyzing the results from GP Lille and verifying that Modern is the most open format ever. For example, check this wonderful idea from Clément Lesaege, which he used to finish in the top50

4 Flagstones of Trokair
1 Forest
1 Mountain
4 Sacred Foundry
1 Sejiri Steppe
4 Stomping Ground
1 Temple Garden
4 Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
4 Windswept Heath
4 Wooded Foothills
4 Boom // Bust
4 Explore
4 Knight of the Reliquary
4 Manamorphose
4 Plated Geopede
4 Prismatic Omen
4 Scapeshift
4 Steppe Lynx
Sideboard
1 Bojuka Bog
4 Path to Exile
4 Pyroclasm
1 Rest in Peace
1 Soaring Seacliff
4 Stony Silence

We have already seen similar ideas in 2010, in old Extended - under the old rules, Flagstones of Trokair was a busted card and it even got to play Bloodbraid Elf or Umezawa's Jitte. So it was a logical conclusion to think that without those cards and under the new rules the deck was doomed.

Clément didn't catch the memo and he finished in the money with this. This sort of aggro-combo deck is capable of winning turn 3 (Steppe Lynx into Explore into Scapeshift) generates a metric ton of damage - and it has inevitability as well, since if we get to resolve Prismatic Omen then every land entering into play equals three damage once we get to 6 lands. And let's not Forget the possibility of locking people out of the game with Boom / Bust

Let's analyze in depth the possibilities of this deck. Let's assume that we have 3 lands at the beginning of our turn and a Steppe Lynx and a fetchland in play. We play our land for the turn, another fetchland, Sacrifice both of them (3 landfall triggers so far). Then we resolve Scapeshift for 3 Flagstones of Trokair and a Sejiri Steppe (7 landfall triggers and an unblockability trigger) - then we get to Sacrifice 2 Flagstones because of their legendary status, fetching two more Plains, resulting on 9 landfall triggers. Total: a 18/19 Steppe Lynx that is unblockable because of the Sejiri Steppe.
