Deck Of The Day #60 - Bloom Titan Is Blooming Again

Nostalgia We have seen many different decks in this column. We have analyzed 4 different formats (no love for Vintage... yet!), this is the 60th column, but I must confess that I have a sweet spot in my heart for the old decks of yore, those decks that are no longer considered competitive but, suddenly, a player refuses to believe it, adds some new twist to the deck and then it is competitive again....

There has been already some attempts to bring this back into life (Journey of Discovery is like a nerfed Summer Bloom) but it was MODO user DaviusMinimus who did a perfect run at a Modern Competitive League with this, essentially the same build we played before the February bannings, just substituting Summer Bloom (which is banned) for Sakura-Tribe Scout and more Azusas.

To be honest, this may be one of the best times to play such a deck with these additions. Lightning Bolt is not as omnipresent as it once was, since now the creature decks in Modern play bigger creatures (Eldrazis, Death Shadow, etc). In fact, the official consensus right now is that Abzan is better positioned right now since it gets to play Path to Exile instead of Lightning Bolt.

If everyone is playing Path to Exile instead of Lightning Bolt then Sakura-Tribe Scout is great, specially if we can play it turn one (we have 9 sources for it). It is a bad target for Path to Exile and it can Accelerate us by itself into a turn 4 Primeval Titan, which is the target now. Turn 3 Primeval Titan involves two acelerators now, which is a testament to how broken Summer Bloom was. If Sakura-Tribe Scout is not available then Azusa can save the day, just remember to keep priority as long as possible.

And let's not Forget that the deck's worst pairing (Splinter Twin) is no longer playable in Modern.

The deck can be slower at going off, but once it has done it then it is as relentless as it was, with a never-ending parade of Primeval Titans or the back-up win condition of Hive Mind. A 5-0 at a Modern League shows that the deck still has legs. Are you nostalgic as I am? Will you give it a try?
