Deck Of The Day #9 - Rumors Of Eldrazi Death Were Greatly Exaggerated

Is not dead! After the so-called Eldrazi winter, many players sighed in relief when WotC announced that Eye of Ugin was no longer legal in Modern. The Eldrazi menace was obliterated from the land, and everyone should rejoice, right? Right?...

After the so-called Eldrazi winter, many players sighed in relief when WotC announced that Eye of Ugin was no longer legal in Modern. The Eldrazi menace was obliterated from the land, and everyone should rejoice, right? Right?...

Well, Julien Potier didn't agree with that statement, or he didn't catch the memo; but he just took the old Eldrazi deck and rode it to the semifinals of Annecy Bazaar of Moxen Modern Main Event:

4 Drowner of Hope
4 Eldrazi Skyspawner
4 Endless One
4 Reality Smasher
4 Thought-Knot Seer
2 Eldrazi Displacer
1 Eldrazi Obligator
4 Path to Exile
3 Lightning Bolt
4 Expedition Map
2 Relic of Progenitus
4 Eldrazi Temple
2 Adarkar Wastes
2 Cavern of Souls
2 Flooded Strand
2 Ghost Quarter
2 Scalding Tarn
2 Wastes
1 Hallowed Fountain
1 Island
1 Plains
1 Sacred Foundry
1 Sea Gate Wreckage
1 Shivan Reef
1 Steam Vents
1 Tomb of the Spirit Dragon
Sideboard
1 Endbringer
1 Pyroclasm
2 Timely Reinforcements
2 Disenchant
4 Stubborn Denial
1 Engineered Explosives
2 Rest in Peace
2 Stony Silence

There has been already some rumblings about the Eldrazi deck still being viable with only Eldrazi Temple leading to broken starts. Those initial buildings were RG and ran the full playset of Ancient Stirrings, which in this deck acts as a turbo-charged Impulse, giving us access to lands and threats at the same time. Julien, however, doesn't play green and goes back to the Eldrazi Displacer builds.

Both approaches have their own advantages: Green brings Ancient Stirrings, which is the best turn 1 play this deck can ever dream of, and World Breaker was instrumental in grinding the control deck; White, however, gives us access to the best sideboard cards - I found quite difficult to beat the fast red decks with this deck, barring some broken starts involving 1-2 Eldrazi Temple.

I am not sure this construction can be quick enough, considering it does not play any Talisman either (I assume that not having Ancient Stirrings leads to not being able to play that many mana cards; Eldrazi Skyspawner should be playing that role, and is a decent combination with Eldrazi Displacer)

The deck, however, has a lot of technology in its colorless lands, which increases the percentage in a lot of pairings: Tomb of the Spirit Dragon can give us some much-needed life buffer against Burn / Zoo, and Sea Gate Wreckage can wreck (;)) the control pairings

All in all, more options for Modern.
