Maria Manelidou

My name is Maria Manelidou, and I am a chess player and teacher. Born in Georgia, raised in Greece and currently based in London, chess has taken me all around Europe and been a source of interest and opportunities for me from a young age. As a junior, I enjoyed considerable success in the Greek Youth Championships, which I managed to win 8 times. At the age of 15 I won the Under 18 title, and placed 3rd in the Greek Women’s Championship. As well as individual tournaments, I have always enjoyed playing for teams. Team successes include winning the 2007 World Schools Championship U16 in Pardubice, and winning three Greek titles with my local club, Kavala. In 2014 I moved to London, and now reside here teaching chess to children, including with the charity Chess in Schools and Communities. I play in the London and national leagues for two great teams – Drunken Knights and Wood Green MM.
